click rate on a traditional Google result when an AI summary appears, versus 15% when it doesn't. Clicks on links inside the AI summary itself happened on just 1% of visits.
What Is AEO?
AEO is how you win when ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews talk. This guide shows you the 8 moves that get your page chosen as the answer. Plain English. Live tools you can play with. Schema you can copy and paste.
Answer engine optimization: the numbers.
of Google searches in March 2025 generated an AI Overview. 58% of US adults surveyed saw at least one AI summary that month.
weekly active ChatGPT users by February 2026, more than doubling from 400 million in February 2025.
of websites in a 3,000-site study received at least one visit from an AI source (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and others).
What you're going to learn.
Each section ends with a tool you can play with right on this page. No fluff. Just the moves that get your business picked as the answer.
What does AEO actually mean?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's the work you do so your content gets picked as the answer when someone asks an AI assistant a question.
Old-school SEO got you on the list. Page 1, position 3, position 5. Whatever. AEO gets you picked as the answer. When ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview talks, it usually says one short answer and cites a few sources. You either are the answer or you don't exist for that customer.
The 8-step playbook in one timeline
Pick a single question
Why does AEO matter right now?
Because the click is dying. Google's AI Overview answers nearly half of US searches without sending a click. ChatGPT now handles 200 million weekly users. Most of those people never see a list of links anymore.
Where customers search now (US, 2025)
The signal Pete cares about: impressions are flat or up but clicks are flat or down. If you see that pattern in Google Search Console, AI Overviews are eating your clicks. AEO is how you show back up in the answer itself.
How is AEO different from SEO?
They share most of the fundamentals. They split on what the goal is. SEO wants you ranked on a list. AEO wants you quoted in an answer.
The good news: a page can win both at the same time. Put the answer first, then build the long-form depth underneath. Humans get the meat. The AI gets a clean quote.
What are the AEO ranking signals?
Five signals do most of the work: direct answer, schema, author, freshness, and citations. Tap any card below to see what it is and how to apply it.
AI assistants scan the first paragraph for a quotable sentence. If your answer is buried below the fold or wrapped in brochure copy, the page loses. Lead with the answer, then explain. Use a number or a date in the first sentence whenever the topic allows.
FAQPage marks up your question/answer pairs so AI engines can extract them cleanly. Article tags the page as cite-worthy editorial content. Both are JSON-LD, both go in the page head. Pages with both are roughly twice as likely to be quoted as plain HTML.
AI engines weight pages with named, credentialed authors over anonymous content. A short bio block at the bottom of the article + matching Person schema with sameAs links to LinkedIn or Twitter is the lowest-effort, highest-impact change for trust signals.
Stale dates kill citations. Engines down-rank pages whose dateModified is more than a year old. Even a small content refresh + an updated dateModified is enough to re-enter consideration. If the topic moves fast (AI, SEO), refresh quarterly.
Three or more outbound links to authoritative sources (Google docs, Schema.org, peer-reviewed studies, well-known industry publications) signal that the page is sourced research, not opinion. AI engines preferentially quote pages that quote others.
How do you write for answer engines?
Answer first. Then explain. Then prove it. The AI scans for a quotable sentence in the first 60 words. If it's not there, the page loses.
We provide industry-leading plumbing services at competitive prices that align with the value our customers expect from a trusted local provider with decades of experience.
Three rules cover most of it. Use the question as the H2. Put the answer in the first sentence under it. Back the answer with a number, a date, or a source. That's the whole pattern.
What schema wins AEO?
Schema is hidden tags that tell the AI what your content actually is. The AI is twice as likely to quote a marked-up page than a plain one.
Start with three: Article, FAQPage, Organization. Add others as the page calls for them. HowTo for step-by-step. Product for offers. LocalBusiness for service-area pages. Person for author bios.

}What about the E-E-A-T signals?
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It's the framework Google uses to grade how much it trusts a page. AI assistants borrow the same idea when they pick who to quote.

How do you measure AEO performance?
Four numbers tell you whether AEO is working. None of them require a fancy tool. Most of them live in places you already check.
AEO scoreboard (a typical winning quarter)
Pete's rule: if those four numbers all bend up over a 60-day window, AEO is working. If three of four bend up, you're on the path. If only one bends up, dig in. Usually it's a schema gap or a page that buries the answer below the fold.

Frequently asked.
SEO gets you ranked on a list of blue links. AEO gets you picked as THE answer when an AI assistant talks. SEO needs keywords and backlinks. AEO needs clear answers, schema, and proof you're trustworthy. Most pages need both.
Yes. Google's AI Overview now answers about 47% of searches without sending a click. ChatGPT crossed 200 million weekly users. If a customer asks an AI about your industry and you're not in the answer, you don't exist to them.
Faster than classic SEO. Schema and clear answers can earn citations in 2 to 6 weeks once a page is indexed. Trust signals like reviews and authoritative backlinks compound over months.
Start with Article, FAQPage, and Organization on every page. Add HowTo for step-by-step content, Product for offers, LocalBusiness for service area pages, and Person for author bios.
Yes. Most of AEO is writing clearer answers and adding correct schema. The hard part is doing it on every page and keeping it up to date.
Watch four things. Impressions in Google Search Console for question-style queries, AI citations from tools like Profound or Otterly, referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in your analytics, and calls and form fills tagged by source.
