You rank on ChatGPT by getting cited. ChatGPT searches the web, leans hard on Bing, reads a few pages, and cites the ones that answer clearest and that other sites vouch for. So let OpenAI's crawler in, get into Bing, answer the question in your first sentence, and get your business named on sites ChatGPT already trusts.
ChatGPT doesn't hand your buyer ten links. It hands them one answer and a few sources.
Bob's buyer doesn't scroll ten blue links anymore. She's standing in her kitchen with water dripping through the ceiling. She opens ChatGPT and types: who's the best roofer near me.
ChatGPT answers in one breath. It names two or three roofers. It shows a couple of sources. Bob isn't one of them.
Bob's roofs are better. Doesn't matter. ChatGPT didn't cite him, so for that buyer, Bob doesn't exist.
That's the whole game now. Not ranking. Getting cited. I've spent 25 years getting small businesses found. This is the page I'd hand Bob.
The old SEO game was about ranking number one in Google. The new game is being the answer the AI hands to Bob everywhere.
Not the way you rank on Google. ChatGPT has no page one. It gives one answer and cites a few sources inside it.
So when people say "rank on ChatGPT," they mean one of three things. Tap each one.
Named, cited, clicked
Example answer. The businesses are made up. You're Ridgeline Roofing.
who's the best roofer near jacksonville beach?
Three roofers near Jacksonville Beach get strong marks for storm repair. Ridgeline Roofing is known for fast leak repairs and clear written prices ridgelineroofing.example. Coastal Cap Roofing handles full replacements coastalcap.example. Tidewater Roof Co. gets good reviews for older homes local-best-of.example.

Named: ChatGPT says your business name in the answer. Good. But there's no proof it came from you, and nothing to tap.
Cited: ChatGPT shows your page as a source right next to your name. Better. Now the buyer sees the answer came from you. This is the one to chase.
Clicked: the buyer taps through to your site. This is the one that rings the phone. You only get here after you get cited.
Most guides say "rank." The real word is cited. Get cited and the name and the click come with it.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to cite?
ChatGPT decides two ways: what it already learned, and what it finds in a live web search. The live search is where you can win this month.
What it learned. Stuff it read during training. Big brands, Wikipedia, sites everybody talks about. Slow to change. Months or longer.
What it finds live. When a buyer asks something local or fresh, ChatGPT searches the web right then. It uses OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, plus Bing. This can change in weeks.
Getting found isn't enough. You have to survive the cut. AirOps looked at 548,534 pages across 15,000 prompts. ChatGPT cited only 15% of the pages it pulled in. AirOps, via Erlin, 2026
The cut
Tap a stage to see what gets you through it.
The question. Your buyer types it the way they talk. Your pages need to answer it in those same words. That's step 5.
The search. ChatGPT checks Bing and its own OAI-SearchBot index. If your robots.txt blocks the bot or Bing never found you, you're out before the race starts. Steps 1 and 2.
The pile. ChatGPT pulls in pages that look like they fit. Clear service pages and matching listings get you into the pile. Steps 3 and 4.
The cut. ChatGPT cites only about 15% of what it pulls in. The pages that make it answer fast, carry clean structure, and have other sites vouching for them. Steps 5, 6, and 7.
Named. Your business shows up in the answer with a source link. A buyer taps it. That's the whole point.
The 7-step playbook to get cited by ChatGPT
Do these in order. Steps 1 and 2 are the door. Nothing else works until the door is open.
Mark each step done as you go. The bar at the top keeps count.
Step 1 of 7
Is your website blocking ChatGPT?
Check your robots.txt file first. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT can't cite you. Period.
The mistake
Back in 2024, a lot of web guys blocked every AI bot to be safe. Some of those rules are still sitting on your site right now. Some firewalls block new bots by default too.
The fix
OpenAI says any public website can show up in ChatGPT search, as long as it isn't blocking OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI Help Center, 2026 Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and run it through the checker below.
The payoff
One file. Five minutes. It's the difference between being in the race and not being allowed on the track.
These are the four bots that matter. You can block the training bot and still get cited. The settings are separate. OpenAI crawler docs, 2026

If you want every door open, this is all your robots.txt needs for ChatGPT:
Cloudflare and other firewalls can block new bots even when robots.txt says yes. Look for a setting called bot protection or AI crawl control. Make sure OpenAI's bots are allowed.
Can ChatGPT read your page without JavaScript?
OpenAI's crawlers don't run JavaScript. If your words only show up after a script loads, ChatGPT sees a blank page. QuickSEO, 2026 A lot of page builders work this way. It's a big reason Wix gets crushed in AI search.
Fix it once and every other step on this page starts working. Robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to kick in for OpenAI search. Search Engine World, 2026
Step 2 of 7
How do I get my website indexed in Bing?
Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. It's free, and you can do it in one sitting.
The mistake
You've spent years on Google. You've never logged into Bing once. Most owners haven't.
The fix
ChatGPT's live search leans on Bing. Seer Interactive found 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results for the same question. Only 56% matched Google's. Seer Interactive, 2026
The payoff
Bing is the side door into ChatGPT. Almost nobody walks through it. Walk through it.

Use URL Inspection on your homepage and your top service page. Fix anything it flags.
Step 1 is opening the gate. Nothing gets cited until the bot can get in.
Step 3 of 7
How do I get my business listed on ChatGPT?
There's no ChatGPT listing to claim. You get listed by showing up the same way on the directories ChatGPT reads: Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, and the big ones for your trade.
The mistake
Your name is "Smith Roofing LLC" on Google, "Smith Roofing & Repair" on Yelp, and there's an old address on Bing. ChatGPT sees three businesses. It trusts none of them.
The fix
Pick one name, one address, one phone number. Copy it exactly everywhere. Claim Bing Places first, since ChatGPT's live search leans on Bing. Then fill out every field on Google Business Profile. Google Business Profiles are feeding AI. Starving yours is dumb.
The payoff
When every listing says the same thing, ChatGPT stops guessing and starts trusting.

Start with Bing Places. It's the one most owners skip.
Step 4 of 7
How do I get ChatGPT to understand what I sell?
Give every service its own page. Name the service, the buyer, the problem, and the next step in the first two lines.
The mistake
One "Services" page with 14 things in a bullet list. ChatGPT can't cite a list. It cites an answer.
The fix
One page per service. First two lines say what you do, who it's for, where, and what happens next. Put your town on the page. Put real reviews on it. An About page AI can't read is the other common miss, so fix that while you're in there.
The payoff
AI is not ignoring the business. The content gives it nothing to trust. Give it something.
Before
After
"We provide quality roofing services you can trust. Contact us today to learn more."
"We fix roof leaks for homeowners in Jacksonville Beach. Most repairs take one day. You get a written price before we touch a shingle."
The second one names the job, the buyer, the town, the timing, and what happens next. ChatGPT can cite every sentence. The full walkthrough, with six prompts, is on how to get ChatGPT to understand what you sell.
ChatGPT pulls in a pile of pages and cites a few. Write one worth quoting.
Step 5 of 7
How do I write content ChatGPT will cite?
Put the answer in the first 60 words. Make every heading a question your buyer actually types. Keep one fact per sentence.
The mistake
A 200-word warm-up about your family values before you say what the job costs. ChatGPT reads the top of the page. If the answer isn't there, it moves on.
The fix
Lead with the answer. Then explain. Then prove it. Make every H2 the question your buyer types, word for word. The full method, with before-and-after rewrites, is in how to write answer-first content.
The payoff
ChatGPT lifts clean sentences. Give it one worth lifting and it cites you for it.
Prompt 1 · Write the answer ChatGPT will cite
You are my editor. Write the answer block for the top of my page so ChatGPT can cite it.
My business: [TRADE] in [CITY, STATE]
The question my buyer asks: [TYPE IT HOW THEY WOULD SAY IT]
My real answer, messy is fine: [WRITE IT OUT]
Real numbers I can use: [PRICES, TIMES, YEARS]
Do this:
1. Write the answer in 60 words or less. Answer the question in the first sentence.
2. Use at least one real number from my list. If I gave you none, tell me which number to go get.
3. One fact per sentence. Every sentence has to make sense on its own.
4. Show me the word count.
5. Write one H2 heading for this section, phrased the way my buyer would type the question.
Write at a 5th grade reading level. Short sentences. No buzzwords. Use only what I gave you. Do not invent a price, a stat, or a promise.
Fill in the [brackets] in the chat box before you send.
You get: a 60-word answer block with a word count and a question heading, built from your real numbers.
Step 6 of 7
Does schema markup help you get cited by ChatGPT?
Yes. Schema is the label on the can. It tells machines your name, your town, your hours, and the questions you answer, in their own language.
Here's the honest part. Nobody outside OpenAI can prove how much schema counts in ChatGPT. But it's cheap, it's clean, and it takes the guessing out. Do it.
LocalBusiness (or the exact type, like RoofingContractor or Plumber) on your homepage and contact page.
Organization with sameAs links to your Google, Bing, Yelp, and social profiles. This ties all of you together.
FAQPage on any page with real questions and answers on it.
Article and Person on blog posts, so there's a real author behind the words.
Example only. Made-up business. Build yours with the prompt below.
Prompt 2 · Build your LocalBusiness schema
You are my schema builder. I run a business. I am not a developer. Explain everything in plain words.
My business name: [NAME]
What I do: [TRADE]
Address: [STREET, CITY, STATE, ZIP]
Phone: [PHONE]
Website: [URL]
Hours: [HOURS]
Towns I serve: [LIST THEM]
My profile links: [GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE, BING PLACES, YELP, FACEBOOK]
Do this:
1. Pick the most specific schema.org type for my business and tell me why in one line.
2. Write the full LocalBusiness JSON-LD with everything I gave you. Put my profile links in sameAs.
3. Tell me where to paste it and how to test it.
Use only what I gave you. Leave out anything I did not give you. Do not invent reviews, ratings, or prices.
Fill in the [brackets] with your real details. Leave out anything you don't have.
You get: a finished LocalBusiness JSON-LD block and plain steps to paste and test it.
Step 7 of 7
How do I get other sites to mention my business?
Get on the lists ChatGPT already cites. Ask ChatGPT your buyer's question, look at the sources it shows, and go get on those pages.
This step moves the needle most. SE Ranking studied 216,000 pages. The number of other sites linking to a page was the strongest predictor of a ChatGPT citation. SE Ranking, via QuickSEO, 2026
The mistake
Buying 500 links from a guy online for fifty bucks. ChatGPT doesn't care about junk links. It cares about sites it already trusts.
The fix
Ask ChatGPT your buyer's top question. Write down every source it cites.
Get on those pages. Best-of lists, directories, local news, your trade association.
Keep real reviews coming on Google, Yelp, and the BBB.
Answer real questions in local Facebook groups and on Reddit. Help, don't pitch.
The payoff
Old SEO taught people to chase keywords. AI search wants proof. Other sites naming you is the proof.
Prompt 3 · Find the lists ChatGPT already cites
Search the web. I run a [TRADE] business in [CITY, STATE].
1. Answer this the way you would answer a buyer: who are the best [TRADE] companies in [CITY]? Show your sources.
2. List every source you used, with the link.
3. For each source, say what kind of page it is: best-of list, directory, review site, news, forum, or a business website.
4. For each list or directory, tell me how a business like mine gets added. If you do not know, say so.
5. Rank them by which one I should go after first, and say why.
Plain words. 5th grade level. Do not make up a source or a link.
Questions where you got cited:0 of 8 · run them and tick the ones that cite you
Then check your traffic. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends out. Profound, 2025 In Google Analytics, open Traffic acquisition and look for chatgpt.com. That's buyers ChatGPT sent you.
Want a score for your whole site, not just one question? Run the AI Score Audit. It checks the seven things AI search looks at and tells you what to fix first.

Anyone promising you the top spot in ChatGPT in 48 hours is selling you something.
Is ranking on ChatGPT different from ranking on Google?

The good news: most of this playbook helps both. Answer-first pages, clean structure, and real proof win on Google too. The full rundown is in what AEO is and why it matters.
Same name, same address, same phone. Everywhere.
Did you mean building a website inside ChatGPT?
That's a different thing called ChatGPT Sites. It builds and hosts a simple site from a chat. It won't make ChatGPT recommend you to strangers.
OpenAI launched Sites on July 9, 2026, in beta on paid plans. Playcode, 2026 It's handy for a quick internal page. A Sites page doesn't get you cited any faster than any other page. It still has to pass every step above.
Not yet, for most sites. ChatGPT is starting to use websites, not just read them. It can fill a form or book a job for the buyer.
OpenAI's Site tools let a website hand actions straight to an AI agent, using a proposed standard called WebMCP. OpenAI Developer Community, 2026 You don't need that today. You do need clean buttons and forms with plain labels, so an agent knows which button books the job.
What nobody can promise you about ChatGPT
I sell this. I'll still tell you straight.
You can't buy your way into the answer. Citations are earned. Anybody selling a guaranteed spot is guessing.
Answers move. Ask the same thing two ways and you can get two different names. Ask next month and it can shift again.
Big names hog citations. In one look at ChatGPT's top 1,000 cited pages, Wikipedia alone was 29.7% of them. Ahrefs, via QuickSEO, 2026
Don't quit Google to chase ChatGPT. Do both. Most of this list helps both anyway.
None of that changes the play. Open the door, get into Bing, answer clearly, and get other sites talking about you. That's the part in your control. So do it.
Does this actually get you cited?
Yes. I asked ChatGPT if GoDaddy Airo is good for SEO or AI search. It cited my Airo review as a source.
ChatGPT read my GoDaddy Airo review, used my point, and cited the page. No ads. No submit button. Just a page built the way this playbook says.
Then it did something better. It told me one line in my review is getting stale. Airo added SEO features this year, so "Airo is not built around AI search" reads too absolute now. It's right. So I'm fixing it. ChatGPT reads your pages closely enough to notice when they go stale. Keep them fresh.
Try it · Grade your own page for ChatGPT
You are a ChatGPT citation auditor. Here is one page from my website:
[PASTE THE PAGE TEXT]
The question this page should answer: [TYPE THE QUESTION]
Do this:
1. Score the page 0 to 100 on how likely ChatGPT is to cite it for that question.
2. Quote the one sentence you would cite. If there is no sentence worth citing, say so.
3. List the top 5 problems, worst first. Give the exact fix for each in one sentence.
4. Tell me the one change that would move the score the most.
5th grade words. No fluff. Quote my actual words when you flag something.
Paste the text of your best service page where it says [PASTE THE PAGE TEXT], then send.
You get: a 0 to 100 citation score, the sentence ChatGPT would cite, and your top 5 fixes, worst first.
ChatGPT ranking FAQ
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. You can't pay to get cited inside ChatGPT's answer. You earn the citation with a site ChatGPT can read, a spot in Bing, and other trusted sites that name your business.
How do I submit my website to ChatGPT?
You don't. There's no submit button. Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools, and ChatGPT can find you from there.
Why does ChatGPT recommend the other guy and not me?
Usually his business shows up in more places ChatGPT trusts. Check that your site isn't blocking OAI-SearchBot, that you're in Bing, and that your name, address, and phone match everywhere. Then get on the best-of lists ChatGPT already cites.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
ChatGPT's live search leans on Bing plus OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Seer Interactive found 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results for the same question, and only 56% matched Google's (Seer Interactive, 2026).
What's the difference between being mentioned and being cited by ChatGPT?
Mentioned means ChatGPT says your name. Cited means ChatGPT shows your page as a source with a link. A citation proves the answer came from you, and it's the part a buyer can click.
What do I do if ChatGPT says wrong things about my business?
Fix the source. Update your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and every directory with old info. ChatGPT repeats what the web says, so change what the web says.
Be one of the names ChatGPT cites
Your buyer asks ChatGPT. ChatGPT cites a few names. You just read how to be one of them.
