ANSWER-FIRST CONTENT

Write the answer.Then prove it.

The plain-English playbook for content AI assistants cite and Google ranks.

Answer-first writing is the cheat code for the AI era. One question per page. The answer in the first 60 words. The proof underneath. This guide shows the pattern, the rule, and three real rewrites you can copy today.

What the research says

Answer-first content: the numbers.

70%

more ChatGPT citations for pages organized into sections of 120 to 180 words between headings, versus pages with shorter, fragmented sections.

Source: Frase.io GEO playbook, 2026
40.7%

of voice search results come from featured snippets, the answer-format SERP block that originated the answer-first pattern.

30.9%

of featured snippets are pulled from the page in position #1, meaning the other 69.1% come from lower-ranked pages that happened to phrase the answer better.

The 7-section playbook

What you're going to learn.

Section 01

What does answer-first content actually mean?

Answer-first content is content that opens with a direct, quotable answer in the first sentence under a question-style H2. Then it explains. Then it proves it. The pattern lets AI assistants pull a clean quote while humans get the full story below.

The 7-step playbook in one timeline

Pick the question

One question per page. Use Search Console + the People Also Ask box to find what your customers actually type.
Section 02

What is the 60-word rule?

AI assistants scan the first ~60 words of a page for a quotable sentence. If it's not there, the page loses. The 60-word rule says the answer must live inside that window.

"In today's competitive plumbing landscape, our company has built a reputation for excellence over many years of dedicated service to homeowners across the region. With a commitment to quality workmanship and customer satisfaction, we offer a wide range of plumbing solutions tailored to the unique needs of every household. Pricing typically depends on the scope and complexity of the work involved, with competitive rates that reflect the value we provide to our valued clients across the region."

Section 03

What are the question-as-H2 patterns?

Three patterns cover most cases. How much does X cost? for pricing pages. How do I X?for guides. What is X? for cornerstone education pages. Make the H2 the literal customer query. Engines reward exact-match.

  • Pricing pages: "How much does a [service] cost?" or "What does [service] cost?"
  • Service guides: "How do I [task]?" or "What's the best way to [task]?"
  • Comparison pages: "What's the difference between X and Y?"
  • Education pages: "What is [topic]?" or "What does [acronym] mean?"
  • Local pages: "Who's the best [trade] near [city]?"
  • FAQ pages: Each question stays a literal query
Section 04

What is the story arc that holds attention?

Answer first, then story. Open with the problem the customer faces at 11 PM. Take them on the journey. Show the transformation. Bob doesn't connect to features. Bob connects to people.

Pete's pattern from Chapter 6 of Balls Out Marketing: Start with the problem. Take Bob on a journey. Use your origin. Show a transformation. Close with what changes. That's a movie. That's how the brain remembers a page next month when Bob's ready to buy.

Section 05

What schema proves the page is the answer?

Two schemas. Article with author + publisher + dates. FAQPage with each Q&A from the body of the page surfaced in the JSON-LD. The schema is the insurance policy that the engines see what's on the page.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "How much does a drain clear cost?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "A standard drain clear costs $185 to $385."
      }
    }
  ]
}
Section 06

Three real rewrites you can copy.

Each rewrite uses the same shape: question-as-H2, 60-word answer, then story underneath.

"Our plumbing services are competitively priced to provide value to our customers. Each job is unique, and pricing varies based on scope, materials, and complexity. We offer free estimates upon request."

"Our office welcomes patients during convenient hours throughout the week to accommodate the schedules of working families with the highest level of care."

"Our firm is pleased to offer prospective clients an opportunity to discuss the merits of their case during an initial complimentary consultation."

Section 07

How do you test it before you ship?

Three tests. Read it out loud. If you can't say the first sentence in one breath, it's too long. Hand it to a 5th-grader. If they can't repeat it back, the words are too big. Paste it into ChatGPT and ask "what's the answer to X?" If ChatGPT pulls your sentence, you've nailed it.

Answer-first Q&A

Frequently asked.

It's content that opens with a direct, quotable answer in the first sentence under a question-style H2. Then it explains. Then it proves it. The pattern lets AI assistants pull a clean quote from the top while humans get the full depth below.

Yes. Google's helpful-content system rewards pages that satisfy the user's intent up top. Answer-first pages have lower bounce rates because the user got the answer fast. Lower bounce equals higher rankings.

No. Best practice is answer-first up top, long-form depth below. Humans skim the answer, then read the depth if they want more. AI engines pull the answer. Search engines reward the depth.

Go to your Google Search Console queries report. Filter to question-style queries (who, what, how, why, can, does). Pick the highest-impression queries with low click-through. Those are the answers your page is missing.

Specific. Numerical when possible. Sourced when the claim needs it. 'A standard drain clear costs $185 to $385' beats 'pricing varies by job.' Engines cite numbers. They skip vague.

Yes, and this is where the fastest wins live. Pick the top 5 pages by traffic. For each, rewrite the first 60 words with a direct answer to the page's main question. Most owners see citation lifts in 2 to 6 weeks.
