How Do I Rank on ChatGPT?The Interactive
6.5-Step Playbook

AI is eating search alive. 58% of consumers now use AI to find their next plumber, dentist, or lawyer. A year ago it was 19%. “Plumber near me” alone gets 450,000 searches a month in the US. “Dentist near me” gets 673,000.
Land in the AI answer for those searches and you take 7 out of every 10 calls before a competitor loads. Here are the exact 6.5 moves I run for my clients. Not theory. Live tools. Prove it as you scroll.

Here we are. 58% of consumers use AI to find local businesses. Every search is an answer, not a list. Your job isn't to rank anymore. It's to be the source AI pulls from. This playbook is exactly how.

1

Answer The Exact Question In The First Sentence

ChatGPT scans the first 50 words. Not the first paragraph. The first 50 words.

AI doesn't read your whole page. It grabs the fastest, most direct answer it can find. Buried behind a hero carousel? Invisible. First sentence, with a number in it? Cited.

Do this step with AI
Prompt 1 · The first 50 words
You are my AI search expert. I run a [TYPE OF BUSINESS, e.g. plumbing company] in [CITY, STATE].

Here is the page I want AI to cite:
[PASTE THE FULL TEXT OF THE PAGE]

The question my customer types is: "[THE QUESTION, e.g. how much does it cost to replace a water heater in Jacksonville]"

Rewrite the first 50 words of this page so the very first sentence answers that exact question.

Rules:
- Sentence one is the answer. No warm up. No "welcome to our site".
- Put a real number in it. A price, a time, a year count. Use only numbers I gave you. Do not make one up.
- Then write a 2 sentence Quick Answer block that goes right under my headline. It has to make sense on its own with nothing around it.
- 5th grade reading level. Short sentences. Second person.

Give me the new first 50 words, the Quick Answer block, and one line telling me what you changed and why.

Fill the [brackets] in the chat box before you send.

You get: a new opening that answers the question in sentence one, plus a Quick Answer block AI can lift straight off the page.
2

Lock Your Entity Graph

AI doesn't remember websites. It remembers entities. Businesses it has confirmed are real.

Your name, address, and phone have to match everywhere. Byte for byte. Google, Yelp, Facebook, BBB, 15 industry directories. I audit businesses every week and this is where 78% of them are sloppy. 'Pete's Plumbing' on one listing, 'Pete's Plumbing LLC' on another, 'Pete Plumbing' on a third. AI sees that and quietly deprioritizes you. Fix this first. It's the cheapest win on the list.

Prompt 2 · Lock your name, address, phone
You are my local listings auditor. Here is my business written the way I want it everywhere:

Name: [EXACT BUSINESS NAME AS IT SHOULD APPEAR]
Address: [STREET, CITY, STATE, ZIP]
Phone: [PHONE NUMBER]
Website: [WEBSITE URL]

Here is how it reads on my listings right now. Paste each one word for word:
Google Business Profile: [PASTE]
Yelp: [PASTE]
Facebook: [PASTE]
Better Business Bureau: [PASTE]
Anywhere else I am listed: [PASTE]

Do this:
1. Pick one master version of my name, address, and phone. Write it out once. That is the only version I will ever use again.
2. Give me a table. One row per listing. What it says now, what it should say, and MATCH or FIX.
3. Give me the exact text to paste into every listing marked FIX.
4. Name 15 more places a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE] should be listed. Put the ones I am most likely missing at the top.

Plain words. Short sentences. Do not add facts I did not give you.

Open each listing in a tab and paste what it says, word for word, before you send this.

You get: one master version of your business details, a fix list for every listing that does not match, and 15 more places you should be listed.
3

Get On The Lists AI Already Trusts

43.8% of ChatGPT's citations come from 'Best X in Y' listicles. So get on those lists.

AI doesn't evaluate your business directly. It reads articles ABOUT you on sources it already trusts. One mention on a 'Best Plumbers in Jax' post outranks 50 backlinks. I've watched businesses go from zero AI citations to being the default answer in their market in under 60 days just by landing on three of these lists.

Prompt 3 · Get on the lists
You are my outreach writer. I run a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE].

About me:
Years in business: [NUMBER]
Google reviews: [NUMBER] at [STAR RATING] stars
What makes me worth listing: [YOUR REAL PROOF, e.g. same day service, licensed and insured, we call back within an hour]

AI engines lean on "Best [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY]" style articles when they answer questions. I want to be in those articles.

Do this:
1. Name 15 kinds of sites that publish those lists for my city. Local news sites, city blogs, trade groups, the chamber, review sites, industry directories. For each one, tell me how they usually decide who goes on the list.
2. Rank all 15. Easiest for me to land goes at the top.
3. Write one outreach email I can send. Under 150 words. Say who I am, why I belong on the list, and hand them my proof. No begging. No hype.
4. Write 3 subject lines for that email.

Use only the facts I gave you. Do not invent an award, a number, or a customer story.

Send the email to the easiest three first. One a day beats a blast.

You get: a ranked list of the pages that put businesses like yours in front of AI, plus the email that gets you on them.
4

Feed AI The Cheat Sheet (Schema)

Structured data is the JSON cheat sheet you hand the AI. Skip it, AI has to guess.

LocalBusiness plus FAQPage plus Review schema in your HTML tells AI exactly what you are, what you do, and how trusted you are. Pages with proper schema get cited about 3x more than pages without. This is the easiest win on the whole list. Any developer can ship it in an afternoon.

Prompt 4 · The schema cheat sheet
You are my structured data developer. Write the JSON-LD schema for my website.

Business name: [EXACT BUSINESS NAME]
Trade: [e.g. Plumber, Roofer, Dentist, Auto Repair]
Address: [STREET, CITY, STATE, ZIP]
Phone: [PHONE NUMBER]
Website: [WEBSITE URL]
Hours: [YOUR HOURS]
Areas I serve: [CITIES AND ZIP CODES]
Services: [YOUR 3 TO 5 SERVICES]
Reviews: [NUMBER] reviews at [STAR RATING] stars on [WHERE]
Price range: [$ TO $$$$]

Give me three blocks, ready to paste:
1. LocalBusiness schema. Use the most exact schema type for my trade, not the generic one.
2. FAQPage schema with the 6 questions my customers really ask, written the way they type them. Each answer is 2 to 4 sentences.
3. Review or AggregateRating schema built only from the review numbers above.

Rules:
- Use only the facts I gave you. Invent nothing.
- Every FAQ answer has to be true on its own with no other context around it.
- Tell me exactly where in my HTML each block goes.
- Then give me the link to Google's Rich Results Test and tell me what a passing result looks like.

Paste the blocks in your site's <head>, then run the test link it gives you.

You get: three ready to paste JSON-LD blocks, told exactly where they go, and a way to check they work.
5

Publish Lists. AI Loves Lists.

If AI cites listicles 44% of the time, guess what you should be publishing?

Lists are AI's native format. '10 Signs You Need a New Roof' can be lifted verbatim. Your service page full of paragraphs? Ignored.

Prompt 5 · Write the list post
You are my content writer. I run a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE].

My customer is [DESCRIBE ONE REAL PERSON WHO CALLS YOU, e.g. a homeowner whose AC quit in July].

AI engines lift list style pages more than any other format. I want to publish those.

Do this:
1. Give me 10 list post titles my customer would type into Google or ask an AI. Each one is a number plus a real problem. Shape it like "7 Signs Your [THING] Is About To Fail".
2. Pick the strongest title and write the whole post.

Rules for the post:
- Open with a 2 sentence answer to the question in the title. That block has to stand on its own.
- Then the numbered list. Each item gets a bold one line point, then 2 to 3 short sentences.
- One idea per sentence. 5th grade reading level. Second person. Use contractions.
- Do not invent a statistic, a study, or a customer story. If you need a number I did not give you, leave a [BRACKET] and I will fill it.
- End with 5 questions my customer asks and a short answer for each.

Run it once a week. Ten titles is ten weeks of posts.

You get: 10 list post titles your customer would actually search, and one of them written out and ready to publish.

Keep It Fresh Or Get Forgotten

ChatGPT prefers content that's 393 days newer than what Google ranks. Old = invisible.

This is the #1 gap between SEO and AEO. Google ranks a 10-year article forever. ChatGPT penalizes it. Refreshed last month > legendary from 2019. Every time.

Prompt 6 · Refresh the old page
You are my content editor. Here is a page on my site that has not been touched in a long time:

[PASTE THE FULL PAGE TEXT]

It was last updated [MONTH AND YEAR]. I run a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE].

Refresh it so it reads like I wrote it this month.

Do this:
1. List every line that is out of date, wrong now, or just sounds old. Say why for each one.
2. Rewrite those lines.
3. Add one new section about something my customer cares about now that is not on the page yet.
4. Tighten the opening so the first sentence answers the page's question straight out.
5. Write me an "Updated [MONTH YEAR]" line and tell me where to put it.
6. Give me the full rewritten page at the end.

Rules:
- Do not invent a statistic, a study, or a customer result. Leave a [BRACKET] if you need one from me.
- Keep my prices, my hours, and my phone number exactly as they are.
- 5th grade reading level. Short sentences. Second person.

Start with the page that used to bring you work and went quiet.

You get: a list of every line that reads old, the rewrites, one new section, and the full page ready to paste back.

Half-Step

The One You Already Know (But Do Sideways)

Your Google Business Profile. Yes. Everyone told you. Here's what they missed.

Why this is a half-step: every guide on the internet tells you to fix your GBP. We're giving it half credit because you know that. We're including it because 78% of businesses we audit still have it set up sideways.

Half-step because you already know it matters. 78% of the businesses I audit have it wrong anyway. Wrong primary category, unanswered Q&A, photos from 2018, service areas missing. AI pulls local data from your GBP before it touches your website. Sloppy GBP and nothing else you do matters. Fix this today. It costs zero dollars and takes 30 minutes.

Prompt 6.5 · Fix your Google Business Profile
You are my Google Business Profile auditor. Here is my profile exactly as it stands today:

Business name on the profile: [PASTE]
Primary category: [PASTE]
Other categories: [PASTE, OR SAY NONE]
Services listed: [PASTE, OR SAY NONE]
Service areas listed: [PASTE, OR SAY NONE]

Description: [PASTE]
Photos: [HOW MANY, AND WHAT YEAR THE NEWEST ONE IS FROM]
Questions in my Q&A section: [PASTE THEM, OR SAY NONE]

I run a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE].

Do this:
1. Tell me the one primary category I should use and why. Then list the other categories to add.
2. Rewrite my description in 750 characters or less. The first sentence says what I do and who I help.
3. Write the 10 questions my customers ask most, with a short answer for each, so I can post them in my Q&A section myself.
4. Give me a photo shot list. 12 shots, and what each shot proves to a buyer.
5. List every service that belongs on the profile, and every city and ZIP that belongs in my service area.
6. Give me a one page checklist I can work through today, in the order that matters most.

Use only the facts I gave you. Invent nothing.

Open your profile in another tab and copy what it says now. Guessing here wastes the prompt.

You get: the right primary category, a rewritten description, 10 Q&A answers to post yourself, a 12 shot photo list, and a checklist you can finish today.
